Abita Andygator

Saw a few of these at the corner store on the way home last night and had to pick one up. I've only had one of these before, and it was in the middle of a long night of drinking in New Orleans, so I really didn't remember if I liked it or not.

Anyway, it's a Helles Doppelbock and pours a nice golden color with an average head. It isn't very aromatic at all, though that might be to it being a bit too cold when I poured it. As far as taste goes, it's really more subdued than you'd expect from an 8% helles. There isn't much of an initial flavor, and it finishes with a flavor that's vaguely similar to Dogfish Head's Midas touch, in that there's a hint of a muscat grape/wine flavor followed by a touch of hops. The mouth-feel is much thinner than you'd expect with an 8%, and frankly this beer could be deceiving and dangerous as hell if one didn't know he were drinking an 8% brew. All in all, I'd say that while there isn't a ton of outstanding flavors to love in this beer, there really isn't anything to dislike about it either. If I were wanting a good strong beer that wouldn't overpower food that I'm eating, or simply knock me over with strong forward flavors, I'd certainly be inclined to have another. Like many of Abita's other offerings, they're certainly not going to win any awards, but they're also brews that you'd probably find yourself going back to time and time again as a base when all you want is a simple beer.
